Human Nature: Our Worst Enemy...Our Best Friend

"The world we see that seems so insane is the result of a belief system that is not working. To perceive the world differently, we must be willing to change our belief system, let the past slip away, expand our sense of now, and dissolve the fear in our minds."
-- Gerald G. Jampolsky

We each carry a model of how the world works in the back of our minds - this model is called: belief. Everything that we experience through sight, hearing or touch is interpreted according to this model. This is why people from different cultures and religions confronted with the exact same activity often react in dramatically different ways. One condemns while the other applauds and yet another remains indifferent! We get our beliefs largely from those who influenced us most during our formative years. Many live their entire lives without ever seriously questioning the basis for those deeply-held beliefs. This very likely results from the fact that whatever they believe has become such an integral part of themselves, that coming face to face with a wrong belief would impact the very core of their being!

Yet it is precisely because there is such widespread divergence among belief systems that we must be always prepared to challenge what we hold dear if confronted with facts which may invalidate them. When the model no longer works to explain the facts we should avoid reacting by knee-jerk tantrums. We only progress and grow as people when we learn to move beyond the fear of changing a long-held paradigm and adopting a new way of looking at things - one more in sync with how things really are!

Human nature is a reality that perplexes and confounds us all - it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy - in that whatever we truly believe we are destined to become is what we usually end up being! In that sense we can either be our own worst enemy or our very best friend - the choice is up to each of us!

(NaturalNews) Last week, I declared 2012 the "Year of Consciousness" for NaturalNews (http://www.naturalnews.com/034554_consciousness_awakening_2012.html) and pointed out that the ultimate solution to ending tyranny, wars, corporate deception and environmental destruction is to upgrade our consciousness rather than "killing our enemies." This announcement was greatly appreciated by NaturalNews readers, who for the most part have a very positive outlook on 2012 and beyond.

But there was something missing from the announcement: How do we achieve higher consciousness?

And I don't mean burning a roomful of candles, chanting mantras for seven years and mastering the art of transcendental meditation (which takes a lifetime or more). That's not practical for most people in the real world today. What we need is a practical way to upgrade our consciousness right now, here in 2012, in our own living rooms.

That's what this article is about: Five practical ways to raise your level of consciousness starting right now. (I'm also publishing a follow-up article listing things to avoid that crush your consciousness.) For this article, by the way, "raising your consciousness" means expanding your awareness of reality, expanding your connection with other human beings and living systems, and deepening your sense of free will, liberty and being the master of your own destiny through applied decisions and actions. It is not just a "sense of self" but also a heightened sense of how your actions impact the world around you.

Here are the five steps:
