The God who gave us life, gave us liberty at the same time.
-- Thomas Jefferson
The condition upon which God hath given liberty to man is eternal vigilance; which condition if he break, servitude is at once the consequence of his crime, and the punishment of his guilt.
-- John Philpot Curran
There is very little in life that happens by pure chance. The victim laments the circumstance in which he finds himself at any given time. Far too infrequently does he look back introspectively on what he himself might have done differently to achieve an improved outcome. Blindly trusting that things will somehow work out better next time, he forges ahead without giving himself the benefit of a candid review and is surprised as he continues to be victimized by events until he either awakens or passes from this place.
During the challenging and yet interesting journey that is life, it is both unusual and refreshing to come across that rare individual who has devoted both time and intellectual effort to understanding the lessons of the past and developing a philosophy for better future outcomes. The Daily Bell interview below is with such a person. Though not a 5-minute read, it is certainly worth the effort for any who wish to gain more insight into why the troubles of our time still have quite a lot further to go and what might have been done for better outcomes. The interviewee's philosophy is closer to my own world-view than any I have yet come across (the only real difference being the allocation of responsibility regarding 9/11). Whatever your views on such matters, I guarantee you will find it to be a thought-provoking interaction.
